Helping with Time

We know that if someone thinks suicide is an option for them, having the time to listen, care and understand, without rushing to ‘fix’ them, can help to calm their mind.
It will enable them to slow down, think clearly, explore all the options, stay safe and get the help they need, before they act on their thoughts.
Most people who are thinking about suicide don’t get a chance to talk about it openly, so they can act on their thoughts at a time when they are not thinking rationally and clearly. A suicidal crisis – the actual moment, that period of possibility – is in the order of five minutes to 30 minutes. If you engage them in conversation, there’s a very good chance it will get them through that period.
