Partnership working
We might be the one having a conversation with the person, but the responsibility is not all ours.
Remember this is just ‘first aid’. If you have given someone CPR, you are not expected to go on and perform the heart surgery, then monitor the person for the rest of their lives.
You are the support
You may find yourself helping someone who is having thoughts of suicide.
Below, this image represents someone someone having thoughts of suicide in blue. The support they are receiving is from you, represented in grey.
Keep scrolling to learn how we can apply Suicide First Aid®.

Connecting to others
Our role, by the end of our conversation with them, is to connect them with other people.
These people could be charities, support groups, friends or communities. There is lots of support you can connect the person having thoughts of suicide to.

Support for others
Suicide is a very personal topic, whilst it should not be a taboo, we must respect the impact this has on everyone involved.
And each one of these people will need to be supported too.

Removing yourself
We mentioned earlier that if you go on to give someone CPR, you are not expected to carry out surgery.
In some case we may find we then remove ourselves from that person's life.

Continuing supporting
Or, in some cases we in face remain in that person’s life as one of their supports. We may know them personally and continue to provide support to the person who is having thoughts of suicide.
