Summary
This course was co-created in collaboration with parents who shared their experiences of supporting their children around mental health and neurodiversity; and professionals working in mental health and neurodiversity. Your child does not have to be neurodivergent or experiencing poor mental health for this course to be of benefit.
It was designed to support parents to support and understand their children at different stages of their development. With a lean towards supporting mental health and supporting neurodiversity, the information contained within this workshop is designed as a prevention starting point for parents to build strategies and tools to support not only their child, but also to understand their own emotions as parents undertaking the challenges of parenting. With hints and tips on dealing with professionals and working alongside schools to support children, there are stories of hope from individuals with lived experience sharing their childhood insights.
Learning Objectives
- Improve basic knowledge around neurodiversity
- Understand the importance of mental health
- Learn tools and techniques to support emotional wellbeing and self esteem
- Recognition of the importance of communication and family cohesion
Disclaimer: This is not a specific mental health or neurodiverse diagnoses course. This is not a course for parents whose children or parents/carers who are in crisis. Both mental health and neurodiversity are broad spectrums of experience. This course is intended to provide parents and carers with tools and techniques to maintain communication and family cohesion, whilst navigating the challenges of parenting and the journey of seeking support. Difficult thoughts and feelings have intentionally been omitted to ensure that all our learners feel safe and supported throughout the session.
