Experiencing a mental health challenge is often upsetting, confusing and frightening – particularly at first. If you start to struggle with your emotions or thoughts, you may feel that it's a sign of weakness, or things are outside your control.

These fears are often reinforced by the negative way that people talk about mental health and those experiencing mental health conditions are portrayed on television and in films. This may stop you from talking about your challenges, or seeking help. This, in turn, is likely to increase your distress and sense of isolation.

However, in reality, mental health challenges are a common human experience. Most people know someone who has experienced a mental health condition. They can happen to all kinds of people from all walks of life. And it is likely that, when you find a combination of self-care, treatment and support that works for you, you will feel you can manage your wellbeing successfully.
